Historical Developments

1944The Chicago Convention established the International Civil Aviation Organization and common ground-infrastructure standards 82 years ago

Signed by dozens of states as the Second World War ended, the treaty set shared rules for airports, air traffic control and aircraft maintenance certification that let aircraft and their support infrastructure operate to consistent standards across borders.

1944Germany launched the first rockets to reach space, V-2 rockets from Peenemünde 82 years ago

V-2 rockets fired from Peenemünde during the Second World War became the first rockets to reach space. The site established the basic pattern of a dedicated rocket launch facility with associated range.

1945United States brought 70 V-2 rockets to White Sands for test launches 81 years ago

After the war, 70 complete V-2 rockets were transferred to White Sands for testing, with 47 reaching altitudes between 100 and 213 km. This established an early American rocket range and launch support infrastructure.

1947The UK and Australia established the Woomera rocket and missile test range 79 years ago

The joint facility in the South Australian outback let Britain test rockets and missiles far from populated areas and later launched Australia's first satellite, before British use wound down as the UK's own space and missile programmes were cut back.

1948–1949The Berlin Airlift demonstrated large-scale coordinated aircraft maintenance and turnaround roughly 78 years ago

Sustaining West Berlin by air for almost a year required British and American forces to organise round-the-clock aircraft servicing, refuelling and repair at a tempo far beyond prior peacetime operations, methods later carried over into commercial airline ground-support practice.

1949The United States began using Cape Canaveral as a missile and rocket launch range 77 years ago

Chosen for its coastal location allowing launches out over the Atlantic away from populated areas, the range grew from early missile tests into the launch base for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programmes and, later, the adjacent Kennedy Space Center.

The adjacent Kennedy Space Center was established to lead Apollo-era launch operations
1955The Soviet Union established the Baikonur Cosmodrome 71 years ago

Baikonur in southern Kazakhstan began as a Soviet military rocket range on the Kazakh steppe and became the world's first spaceport capable of orbital and human launches, sending up both Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin's first crewed spaceflight. Its exact location was initially kept secret, with misdirection via a name shared with a mining town 320 km away, and the site remains in use today under a long-term lease arrangement between Russia and independent Kazakhstan.

Russia's lease of the site has been extended repeatedly since Kazakh independence
October 1957Baikonur Cosmodrome achieved the first orbital flight with Sputnik 1 69 years ago

Sputnik 1 was launched from Baikonur, making it the first launch site to place an object into Earth orbit. The site's position became known outside the USSR that year after U-2 aircraft identified it by following railway lines in the Kazakh SSR.

1958China established the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center 68 years ago

Built in the Gobi Desert partly for secrecy and missile-testing purposes during a period of tension with the Soviet Union and the United States, the site later launched China's first satellite and, from 1999, every Shenzhou crewed mission.

1961Baikonur Cosmodrome achieved the first launch of a human into space 65 years ago

Yuri Gagarin was launched from Site 1 at Baikonur, subsequently known as Gagarin's Start. Baikonur remained the primary Soviet cosmodrome and is still used by Russia under a lease arrangement with Kazakhstan.

1966NASA completed the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center 60 years ago

Built to assemble the Saturn V rocket vertically before rolling it to the launch pad, the building was among the largest by volume in the world at the time and was later adapted to prepare Space Shuttle stacks and, decades on, the Space Launch System.

1968France began building the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou 58 years ago

Located near the Equator in French Guiana, the site gave European rockets a significant fuel efficiency advantage over higher-latitude launch sites, and later became the shared launch base for the Ariane, Vega and Soyuz programmes under European Space Agency arrangements.

1969Japan established the Tanegashima Space Center 57 years ago

Built on an island off Kyushu chosen for its low latitude and safe launch trajectories over the Pacific, the site became Japan's main spaceport, later hosting launches of the H-II and H3 rocket families that underpin the country's satellite and lunar exploration programmes.

July 1969Kennedy Space Center achieved the first crewed lunar landing mission, Apollo 11 57 years ago

Kennedy Space Center was constructed adjacent to Cape Canaveral for the Apollo programme and launched Apollo 11. It later served as the base for all Space Shuttle launches and most of their runway landings.

1971India established the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota 55 years ago

The barrier-island site off the Andhra Pradesh coast became India's primary spaceport, chosen partly for its coastal location allowing launches out over open water, and grew over subsequent decades to host the country's full range of satellite and crewed-mission launch vehicles.

Recent Developments

May 2025Starbase became an incorporated city in Texas last year

SpaceX's private spaceport at Boca Chica, Texas, was officially incorporated as a municipality — the first spaceport to become a city — after residents, most of them company employees, voted to establish it. Combining rocket production, launch and landing infrastructure with a residential and industrial community, it is the primary development and launch site for Starship, and incorporation gave the company greater direct control over local zoning and infrastructure decisions.

March 2025Isar Aerospace attempted the first orbital launch from Andøya Spaceport last year

The German company's Spectrum rocket lifted off from Norway's Arctic coast before failing shortly after launch, a first flight that nonetheless made Andøya the site of Western Europe's first attempted orbital launch from its own soil.

A second Spectrum launch attempt was in preparation for later in 2026
January 2025U.S. rocket-launch sites reported traffic congestion from rising launch rates 1 year ago

Congestion was reported at American launch sites as launch cadence rose, driven mainly by SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic. Three sites in Florida and California handle most U.S. launches, concentrating capacity constraints.

2025Ethiopian Airlines expanded its maintenance and overhaul hub at Addis Ababa last year

Africa's largest MRO operation added hangar capacity and technical capability, serving both its own large fleet and third-party airlines from across the continent that had previously sent aircraft to Europe or the Gulf for major checks.

Late 2024China opened new commercial launch pads at Wenchang 2 years ago

The purpose-built commercial complex, separate from the existing state launch pads on Hainan island, was designed to let private and quasi-private Chinese rocket companies launch at a higher cadence, part of a wider effort to build a domestic commercial launch industry alongside the state programme.

Launch cadence from the site rose through 2025
2024–2025Djibouti and a Chinese aerospace investor advanced plans for a spaceport on Djibouti's coast last year

Agreements covering land and infrastructure for a commercial launch site were reported to be progressing, part of a wider Chinese push to help finance space-related infrastructure in Africa and part of Djibouti's strategy of hosting foreign military and commercial facilities along the Bab-el-Mandeb strait.

2024–2025Brazil sought further foreign commercial use of the Alcântara Launch Center last year

2024–2025The Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan inspection programme kept large numbers of A320neo-family aircraft grounded last year

A manufacturing contamination issue requiring accelerated engine inspections forced airlines including India's IndiGo and several Gulf and European carriers to ground a significant share of their neo fleets, straining engine maintenance shops worldwide well beyond the timeline initially set out.

2024–2025India's government cut import duties on aircraft maintenance parts to build up domestic MRO capacity last year

The changes aimed to reverse years of Indian airlines sending heavy maintenance work to facilities in Singapore, the UAE and Sri Lanka, and were paired with incentives for new hangar construction near major airports including Delhi, Bengaluru and Nagpur.

2024–2025ISRO advanced construction of a second Indian spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam last year

The new site in Tamil Nadu, built primarily to support the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, was intended to relieve pressure on the existing Sriharikota launch complex and give India more frequent access to the polar and sun-synchronous orbits used by earth-observation satellites.

A first launch from the new site was targeted for 2026
2015SpaceX made the first successful landing and recovery of an orbital first stage 11 years ago

At Cape Canaveral, SpaceX recovered the first stage of a vertical satellite launch. This added landing and refurbishment infrastructure to the functions expected of a spaceport.
