1948National Party of South Africa won control of Parliament, beginning apartheid-era racially unequal education 78 years ago

With the National Party's electoral victory, education provision in South Africa was made racially unequal by design. The system persisted for more than four decades until a negotiated settlement.

With the end of apartheid, South Africa's new government took on the task of promoting racial equity in state education, and its new constitution guaranteed equal access to basic education across races. This marked a decisive reversal of decades of deliberately unequal resource allocation, in which Black education had been funded far below white education, and began a slow process of integrating the school system.
