Historical Developments

9th centuryAl-Khwarizmi gave the world the algorithm about 1,200 years ago

The Baghdad mathematician's treatises on calculation, written at the House of Wisdom, gave rise to the term algorithm and formalised step-by-step methods for solving problems, the basic conceptual unit underlying all later computer and AI education.

1936Alan Turing described a universal computing machine 90 years ago

His theoretical model of a machine that could carry out any computation given the right instructions underpins the modern idea of a programmable computer, the basic object that all later computing and AI education would be built around.

1943McCulloch and Pitts published a design for artificial neurons 83 years ago

McCulloch and Pitts proposed a formal model of artificial neurons, one of the foundational research strands that fed into artificial intelligence. It provided an early mathematical basis for later neural network approaches.

1950Alan Turing proposed a practical test for machine intelligence 76 years ago

Alan Turing published 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence', arguing that machine intelligence was plausible and proposing a test measuring a machine's ability to simulate human conversation. Framed in terms accessible to a general audience, and combined with his theory of computation, it set the intellectual agenda of the field and shaped decades of subsequent debate about what it means to understand or use AI.

1950s–60sBritish and U.S. universities set up the first artificial intelligence laboratories 76 years ago

Dedicated AI laboratories were established at a number of British and American universities in the latter 1950s and early 1960s. This institutionalised the discipline and created the training grounds for the first generations of AI researchers.

1956The Dartmouth Workshop coined the term artificial intelligence and founded it as a field of study 70 years ago

The summer workshop at Dartmouth College coined the term artificial intelligence and founded it as an academic discipline, proposing that aspects of learning and intelligence could in principle be simulated by machines. The first AI program, Logic Theorist, by Allen Newell, Herbert Simon and J. C. Shaw, was presented there, and many attendees went on to lead AI research in the 1960s, giving the field its own research agenda and eventually its own curricula.

1964–66Joseph Weizenbaum developed the ELIZA chatbot 62 years ago

Weizenbaum built ELIZA, an early conversational program, and subsequently argued about whether tasks computers can do should be done by them. This launched a long-running ethical debate over the difference between quantitative calculation and value-based human judgement.

1974U.S. and British governments cut off exploratory AI research, triggering the first AI winter 52 years ago

11 May 1997IBM's Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov 29 years ago

IBM's Deep Blue defeated reigning world chess champion Garry Kasparov on 11 May 1997, becoming the first computer to beat a sitting world champion. Game playing had been used since the 1950s to demonstrate advanced AI techniques, and the match was an early, widely covered demonstration that machines could outperform elite human specialists in a narrow cognitive task, feeding public fascination with machine intelligence well before AI entered school curricula.

late 1990s–early 21st centuryAI field restored its reputation via narrow formal methods
