Capability Developments

Major milestones and key developments of the capability

The Capability Development Index tracks the events that move a capability — operational use, technical breakthroughs, procurement decisions and the industrial base behind them — and places each on the record with the date it happened.

Historical Developments

c. 7000 BCStraw-reinforced mudbrick became one of the earliest engineered composite building materials about 9,000 years ago

Sun-dried mudbrick reinforced with chopped straw combined a mineral matrix with fibrous reinforcement to resist cracking, and remained in structural use across the Near East and Africa into the present.

4000 BCAncient builders used wattle and daub, possibly the oldest composite material

Wattle and daub, a woven lattice packed with mud, clay and straw, is described as being over 6000 years old, making it possibly the earliest engineered composite. It established the basic composite principle of a weak binder reinforced by fibrous or structural filler. Similar straw-and-mud bricks were used for building construction and recorded in Egyptian tomb paintings.

3400 BCAncient Mesopotamians produced plywood by gluing wood at differing grain angles

Layers of wood bonded at alternating angles gave better mechanical properties than natural timber. This is one of the earliest deliberate laminated composites, anticipating modern composite laminates.

2181–2055 BCEgyptian craftsmen made cartonnage from linen or papyrus soaked in plaster

Dating to the First Intermediate Period of Egypt, cartonnage combined fibrous sheets with a plaster matrix to form death masks. It demonstrates early use of a fibre-reinforced mineral matrix for shaped structural objects.

c. 2000 BCComposite bows combined horn, wood and sinew to outperform simple wooden bows about 4,000 years ago

Bows built from layers of horn, wood and sinew, each contributing different mechanical properties, gave steppe and Near Eastern archers greater power and range, and remained in use for millennia.

c. 300 BCMetalworkers in South India developed wootz crucible steel about 2,300 years ago

South Indian metalworkers produced high-carbon crucible steel with a distinctive banded microstructure of hard and soft phases, later exported across the Islamic world and forged into blades known as Damascus steel.

25 BCVitruvius documented concrete mix ratios using lime and pozzolana in Ten Books on Architecture

Vitruvius distinguished aggregates suitable for lime mortars and recommended volcanic pozzolana sands from near Naples and Rome for structural work. He specified 1 part lime to 3 parts pozzolana for buildings and 1:2 for underwater work, essentially the ratio still used for marine concrete today. This is among the earliest technical specifications for a composite material.

1867Joseph Monier patented reinforced concrete in France 159 years ago

A patented technique embedding iron bars within a cement and sand matrix combined the compressive strength of concrete with the tensile strength of metal, founding modern reinforced concrete construction.

1907Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite, the first fully synthetic composite resin 119 years ago

The resin, produced from phenol and formaldehyde and commonly reinforced with wood flour, paper or fabric, established the template for later fibre-reinforced plastic composites.

1935Owens Corning commercialised modern glass fibre manufacturing 91 years ago

At Owens Corning, Al Simison and Arthur D. Little combined glass fibre with a bakelite matrix to produce the first synthetic fibre-reinforced plastic, pairing strong, stiff but brittle fibres with a ductile polymer matrix — the template for modern composites such as fibreglass and carbon-fibre reinforced polymers. Commercial-scale manufacturing of fine glass fibre made glass-reinforced plastic a practical, affordable structural material, underpinning later use in boats, vehicles, pipework and construction.

1953General Motors introduced the Corvette with a glass-fibre composite body 73 years ago

The car's body, moulded from glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, demonstrated that composite materials could meet volume automotive production requirements rather than remain a specialist material.

1963Researchers at the Royal Aircraft Establishment developed the modern high-strength carbon fibre process 63 years ago

The Farnborough team developed a process for producing high-strength, high-stiffness carbon fibre from oxidised and heat-treated polyacrylonitrile, creating the manufacturing basis for the modern carbon fibre industry.

1970Rolls-Royce abandoned an early carbon-fibre fan blade after bird-strike test failures 56 years ago

A carbon-fibre fan blade developed for the RB211 engine shattered in bird-strike certification testing, forcing a costly switch back to titanium and contributing to financial losses that led to the company's nationalisation the following year.

1 February 2003Space Shuttle Columbia suffered catastrophic break-up on re-entry attributed to composite structure failure 23 years ago

Damage to the vehicle's composite thermal protection structure led to its disintegration during atmospheric re-entry. The accident underlined how the mechanical properties and damage tolerance of advanced composites govern their safe use in extreme environments.

2006Composites industry introduced a fibre-reinforced composite pool panel replacing galvanized steel 20 years ago

The panel was offered for residential and commercial in-ground swimming pools as a non-corrosive alternative to galvanized steel. It illustrates the diffusion of composites from aerospace into routine construction products.
